Founded in 1986, the Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati (LNGC) originally served as a contact and referral hotline for adults seeking to earn a GED, learn English, or enroll in basic reading classes. In 1988, a full-time office was established and LNGC began acting as a coordinating body for adult literacy agencies. Today, the Literacy Network’s core programs have expanded by developing direct services to help adults and children with low reading skills. The Literacy Network is currently working on a new element to our programs, which expands the presence of Little Free Libraries in our city. The mission of the Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati is to champion the development of literacy in the individual, family, workplace, school and the community, by raising awareness, improving access and serving as a catalyst for literacy efforts. Approximately 15-20% of individuals lack basic literacy skills (or read below a 4th grade level), making daily life a challenge for them. Our goal is to decrease that staggering statistic and make a difference in as many children and adults lives as possible, by getting individuals the resources and tools they need to learn to read and reach their goals.
Come on by, network and help make a difference!
GETDOT Cincy holds an event every other month on the third Thursday from 5:30pm – 7:00pm. Each GETDOT event has the same two part theme – networking and supporting a children’s charity. We look forward to seeing you there!
